70s Spots: Right Guard (Parker Stevenson, 1971) & Dial Antiperspirant (1974)

Frank Hardy for Right Guard, 1970

“In the silver can!”

Here’s a pair of antiperspirant commercials featuring ancient, environmentally-unfriendly spray cans. The Right Guard spot was produced in 1970 and aired on the first day of 1971. It stars an 18 year old Parker Stevenson of The Hardy Boys. I think the other actor may be Toni Kalem from The Wanderers and The Sopranos, but I’m not sure about that.

The second spot, for Dial, aired in February of 1974.

Billions and billions…

“You deserve a break today!”

Two commercials now from McDonald’s classic “You deserve a break” series. The first spot was produced in 1971 and aired on the first day of 1972. The second spot features a symphony orchestra and aired in September of 1974.

We’re cooking up something Seventies…

“Fancy cakes made easy.”

We’ve got a full meal on offer today.* Have your dessert before the entrée with a Pillsbury Chocolate Macaroon Bundt Cake. After that, enjoy Heat & Serve Fried Chicken from Banquet. Both commercials aired in November of 1973.

*I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned here that I’ve been a vegetarian for over 30 years. So, I’ll just dish out a double portion of bundt cake!

Schaefer visits from the ‘Old World.’

“Imagine the single best-tasting beer you’ve ever had!”

Here’s a pair of twice-brewed Schaefer Beer commercials from April of 1976. The first spot touts the brand’s “Old World” brewing style. The second spot takes places at a boxing match with a mildly aggressive, mustachioed patron.

Ye Olde Timey Spices

“Mister, your ship has just come in!”

A pair of vintage Old Spice commercials for you today. First, we have a fluffy, floating ship made of Old Spice Shave Cream in a spot from October of 1973.

Second, one of my childhood heroes, Larry Csonka (Miami Dolphins) for Old Spice Deodorant. This one aired in late December 1978.

‘Great fun for the whole family!’ (Mr. Microphone, 1979)

“Hey, good lookin’! We’ll be back to pick you up later!”

Today, we take a look at some fancy Seventies technology. First up, RONCO’s Mr. Microphone! This particular spot aired in November of 1979 (and many more times in the years following). The pure cheese factor of this commercial insured it was stuck in the recesses of my mind for about a decade afterwards. I enjoyed quoting lines from it at (non) appropriate moments.

The second spot features the GTE Phone Mart and also aired in November of ’79.
