70s Spots: VW Super Beetle (1972) & Ford Pinto (1973)

Meet the Beetle

“You won’t know it’s a Volkswagen until you’re outside.”

Got a pair of automobile commercials for you today. First, we have a November 1972 spot for the ’73 Volkswagen Super Beetle. My mom drove a yellow VW Beetle for ages. In fact, she had a few of them in succession. I used to love to ride in the “cubby hole” behind the back seats. There was just enough room in there for my 7 year old self to roll around without a seatbelt on. Good times.

Second, a spot for the 1974 Ford Pinto that aired in late December of 1973.

Second, a La Pizzeria frozen pizza spot from September ’78 featuring the distinctive voice of actor Eddie Barth.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks

“Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don’t.”

Here’s a fun pair of candy commercials. The first spot, for Peter Paul’s Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, aired in January of 1977 and was produced in ’76. You’ll certainly remember this one and its sing-a-long jingle.

The second spot, for Trident Sugarless Mints, aired in March of 1978. I had forgotten about this product but it brought back memories of how sugar-free products flooded the market in the late 70s. These artificial sugar substitutes were supposed to be a healthier option and help keep you thin.

Here we have two commercials to assist you in obtaining that special early Seventies look. First up, a spot from November of 1973 for Revlon’s ‘Moon Drops’ Lipstick.

After that, a January 1974 spot for Helene Curtis’ Everynight Shampoo. Poor Marky!

Second, a December ’71 spot for Shell gasoline featuring “Pancake Lubricant” for railroad cars. Say, what now? Watch and learn!
