Spirit’s “Nature’s Way” originally appeared on the Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus LP in late 1970. The song, written by band leader Randy California, was issued as a single in early 1971, reaching a peak of #111 on the US Hot 100. The Flaming Ember called Detroit, Michigan home and had four Top 100 hits between late 1969 and late 1970. “Westbound #9” was the group’s highest-charter, peaking at #24 on the Hot 100 in August of 1970.
“Westbound #9” is a recent discovery for me. Technically, I may have heard it on the radio when I was three-years-old, but I couldn’t confirm that. Give it a spin and see if you enjoy this slice of soul-tinged pop.
