70s Commercials: Tropicana, RCA TVs, Campbell’s Soup, Vicks Cough Drops (1972-73)

It’s the early seventies going up today with a few celebrity appearances included. We’ll start off with a spot for Tropicana Orange Juice. After that, it’s the RCA XL-100 TV set, Campbell’s Soup (with Dody Goodman and Eddie Bracken), and finally, Vicks Cough Drops (with Aldo Ray). To your health!

RCA XL-100 television set commercial featuring a wall of talking TVs. Spot aired January 1973 (produced in ’72).

CAMPBELL’S SOUP COMMERCIAL (DODY GOODMAN, 1972)

Campbell’s Chicken with Rice Soup commercial featuring actors Dody Goodman and Eddie Bracken. Spot aired in 1972 (and looks like it may have been produced a year or two earlier).

VICKS COUGH DROPS COMMERCIAL (ALDO RAY, 1972)

Vicks Medicated Cough Drops Menthol Eucalyptus flavor commercial featuring actor Aldo Ray. Spot aired November 1972.

Music For Monday: The Impressions, ‘Finally Got Myself Together (I’m A Changed Man)’ (1974)

The Impressions recorded and released “Finally Got Myself Together (I’m A Changed Man” in 1973 where it appeared on the LP of almost the same name. The song was written and produced by Ed Townsend and reached #1 on Billboard‘s R&B singles chart and #17 on the Hot 100.

Below you can catch a performance of the song on Soul Train. This being 1974, the original Impressions, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, are joined by new members Reggie Torian and Ralph Johnson. Get it together and get it on.

All right, my fellow nostalgic ghouls & goblins, today’s commercials are going to scare the livin’ daylights outta ya! Or maybe not at all.

From 1976, we have Romper Room’s Weebles Haunted House with a glow-in-the-dark ghost and Kool-Aid with a scary mascot smashing through the wall. From 1977, we have a magic-filled Buick Electra spot and finally, a giant talking nose for 4-Way Nasal Spray! Creepy cool!

Hasbro Romper Room Weebles Haunted House commercial featuring the glow-in-the-dark Weeble Ghost. Spot aired in 1976 (year based on product research).

KOOL-AID ‘OH, YEAH!’ COMMERCIAL (1976)

Kool-Aid commercial featuring the Kool-Aid Man mascot at a roller-skating rink. The blond-haired skater is David Stambaugh (‘Bad News Bears’). Spot aired November 1976.

Grand Theft Auto, 1977. ‘It’s a comedy…with car crashes.’

Ah, it’s Tuesday Thursday and that means we have another fine movie trailer on display for you. Drive into the clicker below and enjoy a two minute look at Ron Howard’s directorial debut Grand Theft Auto.

GTA released in of June of 1977 and was commercially successful (to the auto-tune of 15 million big ones.) Reviews, however, weren’t overwhelmingly positive. I sure enjoyed it at the age of 10. A great many cars lost their lives in this 70s chase pic. That was entertainment enough.

Classic 70s Music Ads: James Brown, ’10 Years At Polydor’ (1976)

James Brown Polydor ad appeared in the July 7, 1976 issue of Record World magazine.

Here we have a friendly promotion celebrating the 10-year anniversary of James Brown on the Polydor Records label. At the time of this ad, in the summer of 1976, Brown’s hot disc was “Get Up Offa That Thing” (#4 R&B, #45 Hot 100) from the LP of the same name. Spin it below.
