Daily 70s Spot: Gulf Gasoline (1978)

I'm guessing it's been a while since you pulled the ol' wagon into a Gulf station. (Gulf commercial, 1978)

“The stop that keeps America going.”

We’re getting close to our goal of posting a 1970s commercial every day for a year straight. Today we have a Gulf gasoline spot featuring a fun-loving soccer team and the Gulfpride “once-a-year” oil change. Keep your eyes peeled for the Woody Allen-type co-starring in this one. Spot aired in July of 1978.

On behalf of myself and Bionic Disco, here’s wishing you a joyous and wonderful 2014!

Let’s celebrate with belting out the “Have A Happy New Year” song from Rankin/Bass’ 1976 Animagic holiday special, Rudolph’s Shiny New Year. The tune is sung primarily by Red Skelton. Music & lyrics by Johnny Marks. Arranged & conducted by Maury Laws.

“A lot of girls go around wondering how other girls manage to look so put together.”

Happy New Year! Today’s Daily 70s Spot is another in our long line of JCPenney ads.

Here’s a women’s fashion commercial featuring an actress/model that appears to be Shelley Hack (of Charlie’s Angels fame). That’s my best guess and I’d place a wager on it. If you have other actress suggestions, please chime in with your comments. Spot aired in November of 1972.

“They’re worth a second look.”

It’s time to try on the last Daily 70s Spot of the year. Here’s a Sears commercial featuring women’s “super value” shirts and “pants that fit.” Spot aired in December of 1979. Do we spy some 80s style starting to creep in here?

Music For Monday (40 Yrs Ago Today): Jim Croce, ‘Time In A Bottle’ (1973)

"There never seems to be enough time..." (Jim Croce, 1973)

“There never seems to be enough time…” (Jim Croce, 1973)

Forty years ago today, Jim Croce was at the top of the charts with his self-penned tune, “Time in a Bottle.” The song originally appeared on Croce’s 1972 L.P., You Don’t Mess Around with Jim. It was re-issued as a single following a well-received appearance in a 1973 ABC Movie of the Week (She Lives) and Croce’s untimely death in September of ’73.

The week of December 29, 1973 and the first week of the following year, on January 05, 1974, “Time in a Bottle” claimed the top of the Billboard US “Hot 100.” Head back 40 years with the home movies-style video below.
