To put it simply, for those of us who grew up in the 1970s, The Bad News Bears is comedy gold. I saw the film in the theater at the age of nine and fell in love with this tale of young, baseball playing misfits. The movie also made me a lifelong fan of Walter Matthau who starred as Coach Buttermaker.

The Bad News Bears is engrained in the minds of so many of us that it seems a waste of time to describe it further. Enjoy the trailer below. It spells out the film well (and probably gives away too much).

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you my new favorite tune, “Go Back,” by Crabby Appleton. I discovered this 44-year-old gem a day or two back after stumbling across an ad (see above) in an an ancient Billboard magazine. A brief investigation of YouTube and Wikipedia brought me to the clip below. Crabby Appleton singer, Michael Fennelly posted a rare video of the band’s performance on John Byner’s Something Else TV series from 1970.

“Go Back” cracked the US top 40, hitting #36 on the Billboard “Hot 100.” It’s frustrating that a song this cool is rarely heard today, even on oldies radio. The Something Else TV clip includes the show’s hip opening and it’s worth viewing. If you want to jump right to the song, it begins at 2:17. Go to it!

Ann B. Davis, Alice On ‘The Brady Bunch,’ Has Died

Ann B. Davis, Alice Nelson on ‘The Brady Bunch.’

It is with sadness that I report the death of actress, Ann B. Davis. Davis was much beloved and best-known for playing housekeeper, Alice Nelson on The Brady Bunch (1969-1974). Less-remembered is that Davis also won two Emmy awards for her work as Schultzy on The Bob Cummings Show in the 1950s.

Davis, who celebrated her 88th birthday in May, reportedly fell and suffered a head injury today and never regained consciousness.

Regular readers of this site know that I’m a big Brady fan and the character of Alice was always a particular favorite. It was mostly the varied talents of Davis that made the family housekeeper seem so lovable and multifaceted. Thank you Ms. Davis for the entertainment and memories! Enjoy some Davis/Alice clips below.
