Music For Monday: The Honey Cone, ‘Want Ads’ (1971)

"Wanted: Young man, single and free..." (Edna Wright and The Honey Cone, 1971)

“Wanted: Young man, single and free…” (Edna Wright and The Honey Cone, 1971)

“Gonna put it in the want ads..”

A glance through the chart book tells us that the #1 tune on Billboard’s “Hot 100” for this week, June of 1971, was The Honey Cone with “Want Ads.”

This energetic sing-a-long was written by Greg Perry, Barney Perkins, and General Norman Johnson. Below, you’ll find The Honey Cone performing “Want Ads” on Soul Train in ’71. It puts the “Fun” in “Funky.” (Yes, I just said that.)

“Your home is under constant threat.”

On this lazy Sunday it seems appropriate that we continue with our home improvement commercial theme. First, you’ll enjoy a humor-tinged spot for the Weed Eater yard trimmer. Yes, Weed Eater. Great name.

I recognize both of the character actors in the Weed Eater spot. I wish I could tell you their names.

After that, take in a commercial for Wells Fargo as they attempt to frighten you into buying their home safety products. Both spots aired in 1979. Kaboom!

“Save energy with sunshine.”

It’s time to switch on the tube for some dusty, 1970s commercials. Our theme this weekend is home improvement and the do-it-yourself spirit.

First, we have a Black & Decker Workmate commercial featuring Bob Lilly of the Dallas Cowboys. After that, a vintage spot showing off some early solar power tech from Lennox. Look at those clunky solar panels slapped on the roof! Well, it’s a start.

“What it does is answer your phone in your voice and then records the message of your caller. It’s that simple.”

Direct from the 1973 Consumer Electronics Show. What a concept! But will it catch on? Daily 70s Ad #147: Phone-Mate ‘Answering Machine’ originally appeared in the June 04, 1973 issue of New York magazine.
