All That Jazz chasséd into theaters in late December of 1979. This semi-autobiographical musical fantasy, directed by Bob Fosse and written by Fosse and Robert Alan Aurthur, follows a film and theater director and choreographer named Joe Gideon.
Gideon, played by Roy Scheider, is attempting to direct a Broadway play while also editing a film for Hollywood (see Fosse’s work on Chicago and Lenny for real life references). Stressed, over-stimulated and constantly overworked, Gideon feels his end approaching and begins having visions of an angel of death (played by Jessica Lange).
Here’s a brief trailer from late ’79 that I’m guessing was the teaser trailer before a second, full trailer was rolled out. It provides a good taste of this intense, epic film. Roll it.
