Directed by James Goldstone (Swashbuckler, Rollercoaster), The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight zig-zagged into theaters in late 1971. This uneven comedy about the mafia in New York City was based on a 1969 novel by Jimmy Breslin.
The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight features Robert De Niro (in one of his earliest film roles) as an Italian cyclist and con artist and the movie’s large cast is filled out by stars such as; Jerry Orbach, Lionel Stander, Leigh Taylor-Young, Jo Van Fleet and Hervé Villechaize.
